The 1957 Century Coronado represents the pinnacle of mid-century American luxury runabouts, blending bold styling with refined craftsmanship. Known for its sweeping sheer line, signature "finned" aft deck, and expansive cockpit layout, the Coronado was designed to impress both at the dock and underway. Larger and more commanding than many contemporaries, it embodied prestige, performance, and the glamour of 1950s lake culture. Our workshop faithfully recreates this iconic runabout using premium marine-grade Mahogany, Western Red Cedar, and Teak-reinforced with fiberglass cloth in critical structural areas and sealed with high-quality marine epoxy for long-term durability. Each vessel is entirely handcrafted using traditional plank-on-frame construction methods to preserve authenticity in both structure and appearance. Multiple coats of System Three marine spar varnish enhance the depth and richness of the mahogany hull, while polished chrome or stainless-steel hardware completes the classic luxury aesthetic. Typical build time ranges from 4-6 months depending on customization options. Key Specifications: - Length Overall (LOA): 21ft (≈ 6.40 m) - Beam: ~7-8ft (≈ 2.13 - 2.44 m) - Draft: 2.1ft(≈ 0.64 m) - Dry Weight: ~3400lbs (≈ 1,540 kg) - Hull Type: Modified-V - Passenger Capacity: 8 persons - Engine Options (varied by configuration): 200-300hp - Cruising Speed: ~20 knots Distinctive Features - Classic hardtop runabout design - Sliding Landau hardtop roof - Polished mahogany deck with varnish finish - Chrome fittings and vintage wraparound windshield - Open aft cockpit layout for passengers Performance & Use: Originally powered by robust inboard V8 engines, the 1957 Coronado delivered strong acceleration and confident planing performance, making it ideal for lake cruising and watersports. Its substantial hull provided stability at speed while maintaining smooth, predictable handling. The 1957 Century Coronado remains a symbol of classic American boating luxury-where polished mahogany, gleaming chrome, and powerful inboard performance create an unmistakable statement of heritage and prestige. Disclaimer: 1957 Century Coronado 21ft is a design by Century Boats. Wooden Boat USA is not affiliated with or endorsed by Century Boats. Introduced during the height of postwar American prosperity, the 1957 Century Coronado represented the flagship expression of luxury and performance from Century Boat Company. Founded in 1926 in Manistee, Michigan, Century had built a reputation for fast, stylish wooden runabouts, and by the mid-1950s the Coronado stood at the top of its lineup-larger, more powerful, and more opulent than many competing models. The late 1950s marked the golden age of varnished mahogany sport boats, when sweeping automotive-inspired styling influenced marine design. The 1957 Coronado reflected this trend with its dramatic aft deck contours, chrome hardware, and powerful inboard V8 engine options. Designed primarily for affluent lake boaters, it offered both impressive top-end performance and generous seating for entertaining, making it a status symbol at waterfront resorts across the United States. As fiberglass construction began to dominate the industry in the 1960s, large wooden runabouts like the Coronado gradually disappeared from mass production. However, the 1957 model remains one of the most admired examples of classic American boatbuilding. Today, restored originals and handcrafted recreations preserve its legacy-celebrated for its bold styling, powerful presence, and enduring representation of mid-century boating elegance.

Beginning with pliable, high quality Canadian cedar and hardwood, our craftsmen hand join each individual strip. Hundreds of hours go into the construction of our boats, as perfection is the only option. Once built, the piece is encapsulated in fiberglass epoxy resin adding an extra layer of durability and strength. At last, the water craft is ready for its nautical debut.

FAQ's

List the details of your shipping policy.

What are your canoes and kayaks made of?

Our canoes and kayaks are made of the highest quality western red cedar and some hardwoods. The larger boats are made of western red cedar, pine, and hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, teak, and some locally available woods. Our wooden watercraft are then coated both inside and out in an incredibly durable American made fiberglass and epoxy resin.

You mentioned that you use fiberglass in your boats, so what is the difference between your boats and fiberglass boats?

We only use 1 or 2 clear thin layers of fiberglass coating on top of the wood for reinforcement and added integrity. You never see any fiberglass, only beautiful, hand-joined cedar and hardwoods.

What is a typical cedar strip canoe or kayak weight?

A 15’ kayak weighs approximately 45lbs, making it very easy for one person to carry. A 16’ canoe weighs about 48lbs.

What type of boats do you build?

Our wooden strip canoes and kayaks are hugely popular for touring and recreational purposes. We also build wooden dinghies, wooden sail boats, classic wooden runabouts, and speedboats. Additionally, we can custom-build any design with which you supply us.

What methods do you use to build the boats?

Focused on integrating traditional technique with modern design, all boats are built by hand, typically taking hundreds of man hours to create.

Guidelines for use

CARE:

With a little bit of care and maintenance, your beautiful canoe can last for generations. While our products are certainly durable and solid, they still require the right type of care and handling to ensure that they perform optimally.

  • It is recommended that you rinse your canoe off with fresh clean water after every use.
  • Upon returning from the trip, allow your canoe to air-dry in the shade.

STORAGE:

Besides taking care of your canoe, storage also plays an essential role in maintaining your canoe’s appearance and beauty.

  • Always store your wooden canoe in shade.
  • Turn it upside down on the support thereby keeping it off the ground.
  • Hanging your boat from the rafters in your garage or shop would be ideal storage.

REPAIR:

Minor scratches can be repaired by marine spar vanish or some brand of automobile wax. Smooth the damaged area with sand paper, wipe clean, then apply marine spar vanish.

SAFETY:

Wooden Boat USA strongly recommends that a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is worn whenever paddling.
