The Rio Drift Boat is a purpose-built river craft engineered for balance, precision, and confident control in moving water. Inspired by classic North American drift boats, it is designed to navigate shallow runs, hold steady in strong currents, and glide smoothly through extended drifts with accuracy and ease.
Built using premium marine-grade materials and traditional wooden boatbuilding methods, the Rio combines Western Red Cedar, mahogany, and teak with a reinforced hull laminated in U.S.-made Hexcel fiberglass and protected by System Three marine spar varnish. Its flat-bottom hull and flared sides deliver outstanding buoyancy, lateral stability, and responsive tracking—essential qualities for dynamic river conditions.
The interior is thoughtfully arranged for both performance and comfort. Raised casting platforms, supportive seating, and generous storage for gear and coolers create a practical working layout. Clean joinery and hand-finished surfaces reflect careful craftsmanship while maintaining durability for long days on the water.
Ideal for fly fishing, controlled river drifting, and recreational exploration, the Rio Drift Boat blends refined aesthetics with dependable river performance—offering a craft built for those who value precision, tradition, and connection to the current

The Rio Drift Boat draws inspiration from the historic McKenzie River drift boats of Oregon, one of the most influential rivercraft designs in North America. Originating in the early 1900s along the whitewater stretches of the McKenzie River, the design was refined by skilled builders including Cary Thomson, the West brothers, Veltie Pruitt, Prince Helfrich, Torkel “Tom” Kaarhus, Woodie Hindman, and Keith Steele.
Early versions evolved from simple scows and double-enders—sometimes humorously described as “bathtubs with oarlocks.” With the introduction of laminated plywood construction, the drift boat achieved a sleeker, more efficient form, dramatically improving strength and handling.
Over time, materials such as aluminum and fiberglass further advanced the design. The Rio Drift Boat honors this heritage while embracing modern construction techniques, preserving the spirit of the McKenzie River classic in a form suited for today’s river enthusiasts.
